Myanmar foreign domestic workers (FDWs) or maids are probably the fastest-growing group of domestic helpers in Singapore. One of the main reasons for this is that the hiring cost of a maid from Myanmar is lower than maids from other countries. The salary of a maid from Myanmar ranges from $450 to $600 per month. However, this is not the sole reason for hiring a maid from Myanmar.

The feedback from Singapore employers is generally that Myanmar maids are easy to get along with, hardworking and willing to learn. The main issue for fresh Myanmar maids is the language barrier. However, this has dramatically improved in recent years because most Myanmar maids are made to undergo a basic level of English proficiency before coming to work in Singapore. On top of that, the maids that come from Myanmar do undergo training in dealing with the usual household chores. This helps improves their capabilities to help them meet the requirements of prospective employers in Singapore.

Step 1: Determine if you are eligible

To hire an FDW, you will need to fulfil the following criteria:

  • Be 21 years old and above.
  • Not be an undischarged bankrupt.
  • Have the mental capacity to fully understand and discharge your responsibility as an employer.

The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) will also consider your caregiving needs and the financial ability to hire, maintain and upkeep the helper in an acceptable accommodation.

If you are a first-time employer of a helper, you will need to attend an Employer Orientation Programme (EOP) before you can apply for a Work Permit.

Step 2: Select a maid from our database

We will provide you with a list of suitable maids based on your requirements. Please try to be as specific as to what your needs are. For example, some maids may be better suited to taking care of the elderly whereas some may be better with children. If your home has very high ceilings and hard-to-reach places, you can also inform us and we will try to recommend accordingly.

 

Step 3: Conduct an interview

This is optional but highly recommended. The interview will be done with our Myanmar office. We will arrange a suitable day and time to hold a video call with our Myanmar office. We will arrange for the prospective maids to be present for the call and you can speak to them and access their suitability.

 

Step 4: The process to get the relevant documentation for the selected candidate begins!

If the selected maid does not have a passport, we will apply for one for her. This will take approximately 2 weeks. If the selected maid has a passport, we can proceed with the application for her Work Permit. This will include the purchase of a security bond and medical and personal insurance for the maid. This will take approximately 3 working days to process.

 

Step 5: Receiving the maid

The maid will be sent directly to the employer’s home when she reaches Singapore. If not, the maid will be sent to our office and the employers will have to come and pick up the maid at our office.

 

Step 6: Settling in Programme (SIP)

This is for maids who have never worked in Singapore. This is a 1-day programme and the maid will have to attend this within 3 working days from the day she reaches Singapore. We will provide transport for the maid to be sent to and back from the education provider.

 

Step 7: Registration at MOM and other administrative matters

The maid will have to be physically present at MOM to have her photo taken for the issuance of her work permit. This would be somewhere within the first two weeks of her arrival. We will provide transport for the maid to and back from MOM. We will also bring the maid to have her bank account opened on the same day. This is optional and the employer can also bring the maid to the relevant POSB branches on their own.

 

Things to take note of: The maid will have a loan that is payable to the Myanmar agent. This amount is typically 6 months of her salary. This will need to be paid upfront and will be offset from the maid’s first six months’ salary.
